Organizing for Peace - Widening the Circle
The Jubilee Troupe debuted in La Verne, California as part of an interfaith Organizing for Peace conference, "Widening the Circle: Peacemaking in the Midst of Diversity" in its third successive year. The conference was held March 11-14, 2004, welcoming over 120 participants from across the United States. The Troupe contributed numerous short pieces during conference sessions and worshipful "spirit times."
The six Jubilee Troupees for this special debut event included Shalom Black (DC), Christina Cruz (IN), Chris Fitz (DC), Myra Martin-Adkins (IN), Gloria Newton (CA) and Chris Palsgrove (MD).
Event Highlights included...
|
| Improvisational forms interspersed into the conference session that helped to reflect the mood of conference participants and helped to process the unfolding conference discussions. Below (left to right) Chris Palsgrove, Myra Martin-Adkins and Christina Cruz.
|
|
| |
| A campfire of stories provided for rich story-telling by the audience of conference participants. Below, Myra and Chris Palsgrove begin their scene about an uncomfortable meeting of "Nick" and his friends' unusual neighor.
|
|
| |
| A dance during Spirit Time to a poem by Rabia of Basra, an Eighth Century Sufi poet called "in My Soul." The poem was read three times while new members of the Troupe joined the dance. Here Shalom Black, Myra, Chris Fitz and Gloria Newton.

|
In my soul,
there is a temple,
a shrine,
a mosque,
a church
where i kneel.
|
|
| Prayer should bring us to an altar where no walls or names exist.

|
| |
| And the Jubilee Troupe's contributions concluded at Sunday's church worship service, providing reflections for the congregations with dramatic sculptures like this one with Gloria, Shalom and Chris Palsgrove.

Building the Ensemble
Not only was it the first performances of the Jubilee Troupe, it was also the group's first gathering. For several days prior to the event, the group trained intensively in various forms of theater and dance to build the ensemble and hone their creative expression. Hosted by the Pasadena Mennonite Church and the Pasadena Church of the Brethren, the training was full of discovery, joyful play and exhaustive work for the group and each of the members.
Learning more than just an art form, much attention was paid during the training to emotional, physical and spiritual groundedness on a personal level. In addition, Troupe members learned how this kind of interactive art can have a deep healing impact on each one of us. Watch as Troupe members explore a "Fluid sculpture" expressing feeling shared by another Troupe member.

Christina leads the scuplture, making an "offering" of sound and motion.

Accompanied by Gloria playing the viola, Chris and Shalom join her. The sculpture is now revealing multiple dimensions of the feeling expressed. Both audience and actors are discovering something.
