Curious to see?

The Jubilee Troupe has explored, performed and elicited improvisational performances, workshops and worship pieces for churches, community groups and colleges across the United States. Specializing in integrating new (and old) forms of embodied improvisational arts with sacred ritual and peacemaking practice, troupe training has drawn on Playback Theater, Contact Improvisation, Theater of the Oppressed, Interplay and other forms to fuse creative arts, spiritual practice and community transformation.

With every community visit, the Jubilee Troupe has sought to pass on its own unique training through workshops. Primary workshop themes have included: Creative Worship with Drama, Praying with the Body, Storytelling, Community Building and Playback Theater and Practicing Peacemaking from the Inside-Out.

The showpieces of our work and play are in three main performance offerings:

  • Breathing Justice A Healing Journey of Story, Dance and Song. This collage of en-acted, en-danced stories, poems and sacred text, questions, engages and celebrates our relationships to our community and world.
  • Playback Theater full-length performances uniquely lifting up your community stories with improvisational drama. Audiences share reflections and stories that are played back on the spot. Performance themes have included "Community Stories," "Peacemaking Journeys" and "Wrestling with Angels;"
  • Weaving Worship sacred drama-movement pieces embodying themes that are created for specific worship services;
What does a performance look like?

There's a good chance you haven't seen anything quite like it. We don't look like most "liturgical dance" or funky "modern art," we're not a "comic improv" entertainment group, we don't resemble youth drama skits, and we're not selling tickets to heaven.

However. We are...

Embodied, inviting stories, questions, images, themes into our bodies and then expressing them, plainly, subtlely, starkly, uniquely...

Interactive, with frequent contributions from community and audience members - storytelling, movement and acting...

Playful and Respectful, unafraid to share authentic joy, or solemn silence when it arises out of the creating moment...

Opening Questions, not Dictating Answers, by expressing our movement and acting in concrete ways, not interpreting, stories, text or music as if we know their final meanings...

Accessible, expressing in universally understandable ways the deep yearnings for a peaceable world that we all share...

Emotionally Provocative, tapping into stories, images and feelings that many of us hold in very personal ways...

Challenging, literally asking audiences to participate, ask critical questions and actively join in the solutions that we all seek...

Affirming, recognizing and building on the unique gifts and cultures of audience and workshop members for rooted community growth...

Sharing Peace and Justice themes based on real stories and real people for a real world of here and now, not from abstract, fanciful or philosophical ideals...
